  7.     THE DEPARTMENT OF DEFENSE NETWORK INFORMATION CENTER (DoD NIC)

  10. The Department of Defense Network Information Center (DoD NIC) is located at
  11. Government Systems, Inc., Chantilly, VA, and is funded by the Defense
  12. Information Systems Agency to provide general user services to DISN
  13. users via telephone, electronic mail, and the U.S. Postal Service.
  14.  
  15. The DoD NIC works closely with the DISN Host Administrators, Node Site
  16. Coordinators, Domain Administrators, Network Administrators, and other
  17. Service administrative authorities to assist new and existing users in
  18. obtaining pertinent network information.
  19.  
  20. Databases and information servers of interest to network users are
  21. provided, including the WHOIS registry of network users, hosts, networks,
  22. domains, and communucations server authorities. There is also the NIC/Query
  23. browsing system, TAC Info and Net News.  The DoD NIC is the source for various
  24. reference documents, and maintains a RFC (Request for Comments) 
  25. collection.  Many of the online files are available through the DODNIC's
  26. automatic mail service, SERVICE@NIC.DDN.MIL.

  28. The DoD NIC registers DoD hosts and domains, assigns IP network numbers and
  29. Autonomous System Numbers for DoD entities, and provides domain name
  30. system server files to the NIPRNET community. The DoD NIC also registers
  31. NIPRNET users and administrators and issues Communications Server (CS) cards 
  32. when authorized.

  100. To retrieve a document whose filename is listed above, open an FTP
  101. connection to the NIC.DDN.MIL host, login as user ANONYMOUS and provide
  102. the password GUEST. Retrieve the desired file.

  105. VI.  ONLINE INFORMATION SERVERS

  109. a.     TAC Info and Net News
  110.  
  111. TAC Info offers login help for DISN Comm Server and TAC users, including the
  112. list of Comm Server and TAC dial-up numbers. Net News provides a mechanism
  113. for reading the DISN Newsletters, Management Bulletins, and Security Bulletins.
  114. Users should read these Newsletters and Bulletins regularly to stay current
  115. on DISN policies, announcements, and network news items.

  119. From a CS, provide your User ID and Access Code when prompted., then 
  120. type NIC.DDN.MIL at the prompt. When greeted by the DoD NIC host, type
  121. choose the appropriate menu item and press RETURN.

  123. From a DISN host, use the TELNET program to connect to host
  124. NIC.DDN.MIL.  When greeted by the DoD NIC host, choose the appropriate
  125. menu item and press RETURN.

  129. b.     WHOIS
  130.  
  131. WHOIS is a DoD NIC program that provides an electronic "white pages"
  132. of network users.  It lists the name, network mailbox, postal address,
  133. and telephone number, for all registered users.  Host, CS, domain,
  134. and network information may be obtained from WHOIS as well.

  136.      Accessing WHOIS
  137.  
  138. From a CS, provide your User ID and Access Code when prompted.. Then
  139. type NIC.DDN.MIL at the prompt. When greeted by the DoD NIC host, type "WHOIS"
  140. and press RETURN.

  142. From a DISN host, use the TELNET program to connect to host NIC.DDN.MIL.
  143. When greeted by the DoD NIC host, type "WHOIS" and press RETURN.

  145. WHOIS may also be run from a local host.  The WHOIS user
  146. program for several operating systems is available from the DODNIC.
  147. The "C" language version is in the NETPROG directory, whois.c.

  151. c.     NIC/QUERY
  152.  
  153. NIC/QUERY contains host information, protocol and other document
  154. information, and access to WHOIS.  NIC/QUERY is geared toward
  155. novice or casual users.  It also provides access to the services
  156. offered by TAC Info and Net News.

  158.      Accessing NIC/QUERY

  160. From a CS, provide your User ID and Access Code when prompted. Then
  161. type NIC.DDN.MIL and RETURN. Type "NIC" and press RETURN when greeted
  162. by the DoD NIC host. Choose the appropriate menu item.

  164. From a DISN host, use the TELNET program to connect to host NIC.DDN.MIL.

  170. e.     ROOT DOMAIN NAME SERVER
  171.  
  172. The Internet NIC has responsibility for generating and installing the DNS files
  173. into the G.NET-SERVERS.NET  root server. These are updated three times a
  174. week.

  177. VII. ONLINE FILES

  181. The DoD NIC maintains a number of online files which are available to
  182. network subscribers via the file transfer program (FTP) or Kermit.
  183. These files contain information about  site personnel,
  184. hosts, and other subjects relevant to network users.  See the file
  185. netinfo/00netinfo-index.txt for an index to the files in the "netinfo"
  186. directory.  See also the DISN New User Guide, or contact the DoD NIC User
  187. Assistance service for more information.  Other publicly accessible
  188. directories include  RFC, IEN, SCC, and DDN-NEWS.

  191. a. How to Retrieve DoD NIC files Using FTP
  192.  
  193. To retrieve any of the DoD NIC's public files via your local FTP program,
  194. connect to the NIC.DDN.MIL host, and log in as ANONYMOUS with password
  195. GUEST.  FTP program use varies slightly from host to host, so please
  196. consult your Host Administrator for instructions, if needed.

  199. b. How to Retrieve DoD NIC Files Using Kermit
  200.  
  201. The DoD NIC provides a Kermit server for file retrieval.  Users should connect
  202. to the NIC.DDN.MIL host from a CS. To run the DoD NIC's Kermit server from a
  203. CS, provide your User ID and Access Code when prompted. Then type
  204. NIC.DDN.MIL and RETURN.  Type "KERMIT" and press RETURN when greeted by
  205. the DoD NIC host.  The user should then enter the Kermit escape sequence
  206. to return control to his local Kermit client program and issue the
  207. local Kermit "GET" command to retrieve the desired file or files.

  210. c. How to Use the DoD NIC's Automated Mail Service
  211.  
  212. SERVICE@NIC.DDN.MIL is an automated service provided by the DoD 
  213. Network Information Center.  It allows access to DoD NIC documents and
  214. information via ordinary electronic mail.  This is especially useful
  215. for users who do not have access to the DoD NIC. 
  216.  
  217.    To use the mail service, send a mail message to SERVICE@NIC.DDN.MIL.
  218. In the SUBJECT field, request the type of service you wish followed by
  219. any needed arguments.  The message body is normally ignored.  Large files
  220. will be broken into smaller separate messages.  The information you
  221. request will be sent back to you as soon as possible.

  225. HELP            This message; a list of current services.
  226. HOST xxx        Returns information about host xxx.  WHOIS xxx can
  227.                 also be used to get more details about a host.
  228. IEN nnn         nnn is the IEN number or the word INDEX.

  230. INDEX        Returns the master list of available index files.
  231. INTERNET-DRAFTS xxx    xxx is a file name
  232. NETINFO xxx     xxx is a file name or the word INDEX.
  233. RFC nnn         nnn is the RFC number or the word INDEX.
  234. RFC nnn.PS      to retrieve an available Postscript RFC. Check RFC INDEX for
  235.                 form of RFC. 
  236. FYI nnn         nnn is the FYI number or the word INDEX.
  237. FYI nnn.PS      to retrieve postscript versions of FYI files.
  238. SEND xxx        xxx is a fully specified file name.
  239. WHOIS xxx       Returns information about xxx from the WHOIS service.

  262. VIII. USER REGISTRATION

  266. Host Administrators have overall responsibility for registering their
  267. users.  When new users acquire accounts on DISN hosts, their Host
  268. Administrator must complete a DoD NIC generated template to register them in
  269. the DoD NIC database.  Names and addresses of Host Administrators are found on
  270. the NIC.DDN.MIL host in the files netinfo/mil-host-administrators-a-l.txt,
  271. and netinfo/mil-host-administrators-m-z.txt.
  272.  
  273. End users who require DISN CS dial-up access to reach their hosts must
  274. have CS Access cards that are provided by the DoD NIC.  Approval for
  275. distributing the card is sent to the DoD NIC from the user's Local Access
  276. Authority.  Until the user is permanently registered, there may be
  277. temporary "Organizational" cards available from the Organizational Card
  278. Custodian.

  281. IX. HOST, DOMAIN, NETWORK NUMBER, IN-ADDR, AND ASN REGISTRATION
  282. NOTE: All templates are available through our WWW page at
  283. NIC.DDN.MIL.

  285. The DoD NIC is responsible for the registration of hosts, domains, IP
  286. networks, and autonomous systems numbers (ASNs) used by various
  287. DoD services and agencies.
  288.  
  289. To include a new host in the DoD NIC WHOIS database, the template
  290. found in netinfo/mil-host-template.txt needs to be completed and returned
  291. to HOSTMASTER@NIC.DDN.MIL.  All hosts acting as domain or IN-ADDR
  292. server, routers, gateways, or email servers must be registered.
  293.  
  294. Three times each week, information is generated and installed into the 
  295. DoD NIC WHOIS database.                                                  
  296.  
  297. Military domains are registered via the domain template found in
  298. netinfo/domain-template.txt.  New domain information is installed into
  299. the  DNS root servers three times per week.  Information
  300. regarding the root servers is kept in netinfo/root-servers.txt.
  301.  
  302. Military network number assignments are made when a network POC completes
  303. the template in netinfo/internet-number-template.txt and returns the
  304. template to Hostmaster.  
  305.  
  306. To provide address to hostname reverse resolution, military IN-ADDR 
  307. domains are registered within the domain root servers via an IN-ADDR
  308. template sent to the HOSTMASTER mailbox.  This template can be found
  309. in netinfo/in-addr-template.txt.
  310.  
  311. The DoD NIC assigns military autonomous system numbers (ASNs) when 
  312. the template found in netinfo/asn-template.txt is sent to
  313. HOSTMASTER@NIC.DDN.MIL.  A complete listing of assigned ASNs
  314. is found in netinfo/asn.txt.

  316. From the domain, network number, and ASN templates, POC information is
  317. extracted and individuals that are not already registered are given
  318. records in the WHOIS database.

  322. X.  SECURITY COORDINATION CENTER

  326. The DoD NIC is the site of the DISN Security Coordination Center (SCC).
  327. The SCC acts in conjunction with the DISN Network Security Officer to
  328. coordinate actions regarding security incidents and network
  329. vulnerabilities.  The SCC relays security-related information to the
  330. Network Security Officer and works with him in handling network
  331. security problems.  In addition, the SCC issues DISN Security Bulletins
  332. to network users.  The SCC can be contacted in these ways:
